INTERNAL — origin of the archive, for whoever asks next. AZIMUTH began in 2019 as a grey filing cabinet in a rented room above the Rue du Docteur Paccard, Chamonix. Éliane Roux had guided professionally for fifteen years and had never once thrown away a route card. Weather logs, gear ledgers, timings, photographs of bergschrunds with dates on the back — clients kept asking to read the files before they would commit to a route. Eventually she noticed that the reading was the product.
The company was registered that autumn with one rule that still stands: nothing goes on the website that is not in the cabinet first. Matteo Sartori brought his Caucasus archive in 2021; Sofía Aldunate her Cordillera Blanca seasons in 2022; Pemba Gyaltsen joined in 2024 and quietly corrected our Himalayan altitudes. The cabinet is now digital, versioned, and roughly four hundred documents deep. The grey original keeps the office coffee machine level.
We stay small on purpose. Six expeditions on the file at any time, four guides, ratios that do not stretch. When a route stops being one we would climb ourselves, it comes off the file — this has happened twice and will happen again. If this memo needs a conclusion, it is this: we are not in the adventure business. We are in the accuracy business, conducted outdoors.

Clauses we operate by
1.1
No expedition is sold until its route card, kit manifest, and weather history sit complete in the archive. If we cannot document a route to our own standard, we do not run it.
1.2
One guide to two climbers on technical ground, one to four below it. These numbers are load-bearing walls, not seasonal furniture — they never flex with demand, deadlines, or enthusiasm.
2.1
We grade on the alpine scale, F through TD, and we grade honestly. A route that flatters its number in a brochure will not flatter it at 5,000 metres.
2.2
Every itinerary carries reserve days and every summit remains conditional. We sell a properly run attempt, never an outcome. Descending on time is recorded in the file as a success.
3.1
Every expedition amends the file within fourteen days of return: what changed, what failed, what surprised us. Errors are logged, not deleted. The file exists to be right, not tidy.
3.2
Enquiries are read by guides and answered within 48 hours, in plain language, sometimes from a tent. If a route is wrong for you, the reply will say so and suggest what is right.
